wonderful people:
Hanif Kureishi; David Miller; Chris Harper at Sonnet; Anton at Concrete Planet for the sofa (and yes, it was red); Dan the Man and all the fine folks at the Embassy; Andrea (for taking us to the best parties); Hugh Thomson; Richard Tandy at Push & Plug; Panos; Mike at Music Media for saving our lives; Ian ‘Power Tools’ Capes; The Gorgeous (and now pierced) Natalie; Zacos Minimarket (for keeping us alive); Angela (for consistently drinking the editor under the table and then breaking things and for believing in em from the start); everyone that offered words of wisdom and encouragement in the face of the editor’s bar-room pessimism; and all the contributors - thanks for spending your stamp-money on em. Hope you like it.

Here are a few tasty bits of em one, the book. If you enjoy these extracts, please buy a copy, and maybe it'll prompt us to bring out an em four. At the very least, email the editor with your thoughts, praise, and derision.

here's the endnote that appeared in the book:

That's it for em (pronounced "em") one. Actually, as I'm writing this, (November something, midnight, pissing down) I'm sure there's a thousand nightmares to come before you, beloved purchaser, are holding it in your mittens. In the coming months beyond getting it printed, bound, pressed, mastered, duped, Velcro®ed, wrapped, used as an excuse to party, sold and despatched, I'll be working on em two, probable bankruptcy notwithstanding. Hopefully you've noticed by now that the premise of this whole thing is that writing and music are allied forms—connected by an ability to move the same bits of your anatomy, whatever they may be. Or maybe it's just me. Time will tell. I've gone for variety in all areas, ignoring the horror-stricken gawps that I get when I tell people that there is no theme, other than good writing, good music, set in a simple, accessible, non-destructive design. Ignoring people that say oh, but I only want to read stories, etc. My aim was to surprise people by the things that other people make, and give them no warning about what's going to be over the page, on the next track. That's exactly what's been happening to me six days a week for the past year, whenever the postman spills his wad of offerings through the furry slot in my door. Anyway, look out for em two in the summer of '97. Let's hope it's a hot one.
