is three the magic number? 22/10/2001

Only two years have passed since my last entry. I'm gathering speed. By 2060 I'll be adding an entry per day.

Since the last time I logged, my circumstances have changed - I've gone from being a corporate designer under the employ of a multinational company to a freelance designer, with a tentative toe in the film industry. Initially I was afraid of being all alone, without a big company to look after me. Now I realise it was the trepidation of a domestic animal released into the wild. I realised I can go out whenever I like. I can take a day off without having to ask permission.

Anyway, em three is about to hit the streets. I don't think this will be the last. But if it is, I won't mind; it's so perfect and beautiful it would be a perfect place to say goodbye. I hope it does well - it would be a criminal shame if the people involved don't get the exposure they deserve...

the final push? 01/09/99

Who'd have thought that it would be three years since my first and only diary entry, a diary that was to be later transcribed into a book of best-selling memoirs, and subsequently a TV movie starring a haggard Cauley McCulkin and a drug-addled Britney Spears?

Still. I never was much of a diarist.

Anyway - here I am on the cusp of a third and possibly final issue. For a while anyway. Mainly because no-one seems interested in buying it. And I need a holiday.

That's it for now. There will be more. K.

origins 5/10/96

Before I found em I was a listless soul, happy to wander aimlessly through London, savouring the taste of the air and the way that tall buildings seemed to puncture the smog. Then, just before Christmas, 1995, I had an idea.

At the time, I was working as a technical author, writing manuals for a rapidly disintegrating business software company in Whitechapel, London E1. I was happy - I worked with splendid people (hiya folks), and I was creating something I was strangely proud of, even though I had no interest in the subject matter.

In my spare time I was holed up in my bedroom writing mediocre short stories, and really, really bad poetry, whilst listening to strange music, impulse-bought from second-hand record shops.

Then one day at work I was finalising a manual (the WinWork Developer's Guide, actually), preparing it for the printers - a warehouse full of Docutechs in Basingstoke. I was surrounded by proofs and quotes and then it happened.

I knew how much it cost to print a book.

I had all the skills to put one together.

I could afford to do it (or so I thought...ha ha ha).

So why wasn't I using my skills to create something that I'm interested in? Like writing and.... um...music?

So I decided. Start a publication. Not an ordinary writing publication, of dully printed dry academia and Times New Roman. But a new, beautiful thing, full of snippets, images, cartoons, whatever people were producing. And then, taking it further, I would add the music in the form of a tape of new demos, selected from the wealth of dazzling musical talent that for some reason can't get noticed and want to change that.

So here I am. Eight months down the line, I'm nearly ready to produce the first issue. I've been really pleased with the quality of the writing I've received; some real shining stars have been extremely keen and come up with some exciting goods. I've also attracted some attention from a certain extremely well known author and screen-writer whose vision matches my own...he's offered to produce something, so we'll see what happens. I'm also looking for a celebrity introduction, for that extra shelf-power.

As for the music, I'm still looking for cool drum n bass vibes, hip-hop, trip-hop, house, Goa trance, and any other forms of dance music out there. have a look at the music section for more information on sending in your stuff.

I'm currently funding the venture by:
  • an enormous bank loan
  • sponsorship help from Sonnet Internet (basically paying for my web access & site)
  • working as a graphic designer for Reuters. This means that I only get to work on em outside business hours. As a result I've become a highly motivated listless soul, running around London in my lunch hours, and sitting in front of a PC until extremely late o'clock every night. And still finding time to have a social life.

Talking of which, I'm off out. Look out for regular updates.
